Due to the High School of Fine Arts, Mandalay has a thriving art scene. Here is our pick of the best galleries in town.

Htan Yeik Nyo Gallery
A cluster of mismatched buildings houses a great collection of modern artworks and the shaded outdoor seating area creates a haven from the dusty road close by. Owned by renowned artist U Myo Khin, who often exhibits in Beijing, the family also have a further three galleries and studios across Myanmar.

Mandalay Contemporary Art Centre/Dreamland Studio
Large stone sculptures balance on the facade of this music school come arts centre that hosts workshops in creative arts ranging from sculpture to journalism, at times led by foreign artists. A shop selling cheap art supplies is at the entrance.

Soe Aung Gallery
Friendly artist Soe Aung has been running this space in the front room of his home for 20 years. There you will find a wide collection of art ranging from impressionist to cubist and realist. Table and chairs take centre stage in the gallery, providing a space for local painters to discuss their works on display.

Mandalay Hill Art Gallery
Weekly rotating exhibitions take place at the foot of Mandalay Hill, featuring artists from the Upper Mandalay Artists Association. There is a wide array of paintings, varying in styles and techniques, and a shaded seating area to take a breather after climbing the hill.

Gallery Mandalay
A branch of Yangon’s Myanmar Ink Gallery, this gallery gives an opportunity to see the work of Yangon’s famous contemporary artists such as U Lun Gywe, U Win Pe, U Chan Nyein Kyaw and U Win Pe Myint. The paintings change every three months.
