Shwe Burma

Shwe Burma

Shwe Burma is a traditional restaurant located directly opposite the east gate. The restaurant unusually

doubles up as an outlet for thanaka – the wood based face product traditionally applied to the cheeks of

Myanmar children and women.

The restaurant is family owned and has been open since 1962. Daw Cho Cho Lwin is the aged friendly

head of the family, and with her daughter Shwe Ma May, they run the shop and restaurant. Both will

excitedly show you how thanaka is prepared using the raw wood, water and a large flat grinding stone.

The food is cheap (1,500 kyats) and nothing special, however the interesting hotchpotch between shop

and restaurant, and the friendly owners make the spot worth a swing by. For a take-away treat try the

tamarind sweet and sour candy bought in little plastic tubes.
