Mandalay is known throughout Myanmar for having a strong tea shop culture and excellent food. Yet few travel companies provide visitors with the opportunity to discover the wonderful flavours of the city, choosing instead to send their guests to 'tourist style' restaurants. Fortunately now there are two options for those wanting to delve into the local food scene.

Grasshopper Adventures offers a 'Mandalay Tea Shop Foodies' tour daily from 08.00-12.00. Traveling by trishaw with a local guide, participants get to visit fresh markets, rub shoulders with locals at tea shops, watch street vendors prepare hot noodle dishes and of course taste a variety of snacks along the way. It provides great insight to the culture and tastes of Mandalay. To book call: 09402659886 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Another option is a hands-on cooking class with Daw Khin Nyien, aka Aunty Alice. Taught in the quiet courtyard of her guesthouse or in her family home, Alice teaches the preparation of traditional Burmese dishes including salads, soups and curries. A variety of spices and local vegetables are introduced and hearing Alice's personal stories about food and family are a real treat. Classes are available at lunch or dinner but must be booked in advance. To book call: 09444043284 or stop by Ma Ma Guesthouse on 59th street.
